“My limb difference has always been part of the narrative of my work.”
“Experiencing life with a disability has given me a unique viewpoint on the world and that is reflected in my artwork. Through painting, collage, and new media projects, I consider my work to be an unfolding personal narrative.”
In her series Sweater Weather, Hopson transforms domestic materials and gestures of care into paintings and collages that make invisible labor visible. The work focuses on maternal mental health and the lived experiences of disabled parenting, incorporating baby blankets and household fabrics layered with images of intimacy between mother and child. Her multi-video series Disabled Caregivers’ Utopia imagines what a true culture of access and support could look like. The project reflects on how caregiving and disability intertwine, revealing that accessibility is both universal and deeply individual. Hopson’s autobiographical series Belonging moves deftly between past and present to examine memory, body shame, and transformation. Using video, installation, drawing, and collage, she reimagines one of the most familiar symbols of Southern girlhood: the drill team through its repetition, rigidity, and ritualism. Across all her work, Hopson creates space for visibility and conversation. Her practice begins in the body, but it always extends outward into the community. Storytelling and participation are the connective tissue.
